Filmmaker Karan Johar may have to put one of his most ambitious projects, Takht on hold.
The news of the period-drama being shelved has been doing the rounds for some time now. While some speculate that the delay is due to the global pandemic outbreak (COVID-19), other sources suggest that Fox Star Studios has been contemplating their association with Dharma Productions for a while.
The two productions houses have co-produced several successful projects over the years. However, the box-office failure of Dharma’s last few films made Fox Star re-evaluate any future collaborations.
Word on the streets is also that the disappointing reception of Kalank [2019] was responsible for such a harsh reaction from Fox Star.
Takht, a multi-starrer, is being touted as the most expensive project produced under the banner, with an estimated budget of INR 250 crores. This makes it harder for Fox Star to support it owing to the financial setbacks of 2020 with the underwhelming commercial response of Chhapaak (starring Deepika Padukone) and Panga (Kangana Ranaut).
There’s been no official statement or confirmation from either party.
Dharma Productions has temporarily shut shop due to the nationwide lockdown and may even have to re-think and restructure other projects in the pipeline.
Karan Johar’s last directorial release was in 2016, Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, starring Anushka Sharma, Aishwarya Rai and Ranbir Kapoor.
